Thermal Power

Thermal power is another renewable energy created using the abundant resources of the sun. It is created when the sun’s energy is collected to generate heat using lenses and reflectors that concentrate the heat. Thermal technology is unique because solar energy can be stored and used to generate power at any time it is needed during cloudy or rainy days and even at night.
Thermal power plants are not only a wonderful source of clean, renewable energy, they create jobs for the people who live in the communities they serve.  In fact, typically, thermal power plants employ two-and-half times as many skilled employees as traditional fossil fuel factories. Thermal technology enables the collection of the sun’s radiating warmth in several ways:

  • One way uses graceful Solar Parabolic Troughs. These are comprised of a series of mirrors that are curved to form troughs to capture the sun’s light. The solar light is concentrated by the mirrors and this mighty energy is then focused on a pipe containing fluid. The fluid is heated and circulated through the pipe creating heat energy. This energy is then used to power conventional generators to create electricity.
  • Another method called a Solar Parabolic Dish System consists of a concentrator that is parabolic in shape, much like a satellite dish. It is designed to reflect solar radiation onto a receiver which is affixed to the focal point at the center of the dish. The heat that is collected is transferred directly to a hear engine and used to generate electricity.
  • A third method is a Solar Central Receiver, called a "Power Tower" because it is comprised of a tower surrounded by a large array of heliostats. Heliostats are mirrors that track the sun and reflect its rays onto the receiver, which absorbs the heat energy that is then utilized in driving a turbine electric generator.

Each of these methods uses the clean renewable energy of the sun combined with human created generators to provide consistent, clean and abundant energy to families, businesses and other organizations that join together to make our communities.
